The Medical Technology and Simulation Center (MTSC) at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Lakewood Ranch, in partnership with the Florida Healthcare Simulation Alliance, hosted “ISIM: Improving Simulation Instructional Methods,” a two-day continuing education course for Florida’s health care educators and clinicians who want to implement or enhance the use of simulation in their programs or agencies.
More than 30 health care professionals from different agencies took the course, including nursing educators, nurses, doctors, paramedics and respiratory therapists.
The course, which was a collaborative effort with the Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education at the University of Miami, and Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research at the University of Pittsburgh, was supported by a state grant from the Florida Department of Education to the Gordon Center to disseminate statewide health care simulation training programs to improve patient care and save lives of Florida’s citizens.
Dr. Cathy King, an SCF BSN faculty member, is the vice chair for the West Central Florida Region of the FHSA. King also is one of 12 health care professionals selected to serve on the FHSA’s statewide Faculty Council Task Force, charged with developing the core curriculum for simulation competence through continuing education.
The MTSC at SCF Lakewood Ranch was recently designated as one of four regional training centers for FHSA. The mission of the FHSA is to advance, coordinate and expand the use of all forms of simulation in academic settings, health care institutions and agencies across the state to advance health care education to foster patient safety. SCF is an academic gold-level member of the FHSA. The alliance serves as a resource to facilitate collaboration, networking and the development and integration of best practices into the delivery of patient care and to improve patient safety.
